Welcome to the fourth grade! The students have had a successful week settling into fourth grade. The students have begun writing Diamanté poems about fall leaves. They are creating fall leaf frames to frame their completed poems. As we enjoy the beauty of the fall leaves, in Religion class the students will be talking about God's creation, the world, and how we can take care of the earth.
The Diamanté poetry writing is part of a poetry unit the students will be doing. Some of the other types of poetry the students will be learning about are Acrostic poems, Couplets, Cinquain poems, Limericks and Catalog poems.
The students will be making cheerful, stuffed, paper bag pumpkins. After making their pumpkins they will write informative paragraphs explaining the process they used to create their pumpkins.
The students will be learning about the Scientific Method and different tools used in Science, such as standard measure, microscopes, pan balances, measuring cups, graduates and the hand lens. The students will be participating in a Rock Lab where they will use a hand lens to study different rocks and then determine the various properties of the rocks.
The fourth grade will begin the year learning about the geography of New York in Social Studies. The landforms of New York and the natural wonders of New York such as Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, the Adirondack Mountains, the Hudson River and Montauk Point are some of the things the students will be learning about. In addition, the students will be creating New York State travel brochures that include the natural wonders of New York State.
