Composer of the Month

Johann Sebastian Bach

(1685-1750)

Our composer of the month for the month of January is Johann Sebastian Bach. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer from the Baroque Era of music. The youngest of eight children, Bach’s father and his uncles were all musicians, and his father taught him violin and music theory. He is considered by many to be the father of modern music, creating many rules in composition that we still follow to this day. His occupations include church organist, court musician for royalty, and court composer. Bach wrote over a thousand compositions in his life, was married two times, and had a total of twenty children, many of whom became composers and musicians themselves. His famous works include the Brandenburg Concertos, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, church cantatas and masses, and keyboard, harpsichord, and organ music. Bach died at the age of 65 from complications of unsuccessful treatment following eye surgery.
